EFCE Forum on Energy, Environment and Digital Transition 2022

Milan, Italy, Tuesday 25 October 2022, Room AIDA-B

In occasion of the E2DT conference organized by AIDIC in Milan, the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE) presents a Forum on the subjects related to the conference topic: Energy, Environment and Digital Transition. The Forum is open to participants to E2DT.

Participation of members of AIDIC and other EFCE member societies is a subject to registration at Contact, considering that the seats are limited.

FIRST PART – Principal Lecture
9.40 to 10:40

The Principal Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Hermann J. Feise, the former President of EFCE, and the current Chair of the EFCE Working Party on Education. This session is introduced and chaired by Giorgio Veronesi, President of EFCE, and Petr Kluson, Scientific Vice-President of EFCE.

H. J. Feise, J. Unger (BASF, Ludwigshafen, DE): Is a climate friendly chemical industry possible?

SECOND PART – Round Table Discussion
11.20 to 12.40

Giorgio Veronesi, President of EFCE, will moderate this part.
In particular, the subjects treated will be Ethics, Education, Digital tools, Energy vectors, Critical materials for renewable energies, etc. Among others, Jarka Glassey, Executive VP of EFCE, Petr Kluson, Scientific VP of EFCE, David Bogle, President of IChemE, Hermann J. Feise, Chair of the EFCE Education Working Party, and Elisabetta Brunazzi and Maurizio Rovaglio, members of the EFCE Board of Trustees, will take part.

EFCE Forum 2013

The EFCE President and the Executive Board invited the chemical engineering community to the EFCE Forum 2013 which was held in conjunction with ECCE9/ECAB2  on Sunday, 21 April 2013 at the World Forum The Hague, the Netherlands.

On the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of EFCE, Prof Rafiqul Gani, Sycientific Vice-President of the Federation, hosted a panel discussion on the role of EFCE on topical issues surrounding: Education, Sustainability, Bio, Innovation.

Invitation

EFCE Forum 2012

For the third time, The EFCE President and the Executive Board invited the chemical engineering community to the EFCE Forum. This year's Forum was held in conjunction with the CHISA 2012-  the 20th InternationalCongress of Chemical and Process Engineering, on Saturday, 25 August, 17.00 - 18.00 h at Clarion Congress Hotel, Prague, Czech Republic.

Invitation and Agenda

EFCE Forum 2011

For the second time, EFCE organised an EFCE Forum which was held in conjunction with the 8th European Congress of Chemical Engineering, ECCE-8, on Sunday, 25 September 2011, at the International Congress Centrum (ICC), Berlin, Germany.

EFCE Forum at Berlin

The EFCE has been thinking about its future strategy. The world around us is changing fast, with anxieties about fossil fuel and global warming, about resource depletion and security of supply of many key commodities. All this against the backdrop of wilting economies - the banking crisis and its knock-on effects. On the other hand we have seen steadily improving living standards in most areas, with great new technologies and products that improve lives still further. And we have the opportunities offered by revolutions in communications and biotechnology. This is not an exclusive list of changes! So how should the EFCE be responding? Following an open Forum discussion at CHISA in Prague in 2010, we organized a "Perspectives" opinion survey early in 2011. The results were presented at a Forum in Berlin in September, prior to ECCE8. Extrapolating from some 1800 responses across Europe suggests that we are pretty pleased to be chemical engineers - 83% agreed that "Chemical engineering is the right career for me". We are worried about jobs though. In Germany 91% agreed that employment prospects for chemical engineers were good - the highest in the EFCE area - but in other places the optimism was less, and sometimes much less - a matter of concern. A convincing 87% felt that governments should do more to reduce reliance on fossil energy, though 58% asked for more factual information to enable them to understand energy and climate issues. The Survey included many other topics, and the Forum at Berlin went on to discuss what our priorities should be. To diversify the debate we split up into five groups, and we certainly heard a variety of intriguing ideas! Here are a few, to give a flavour: we should improve our outreach to young people, since too few participate in our Working Parties and Sections; we emphasize energy issues, but do not think so much about water, which is also a vital, and frequently scarce, resource. Many wanted the EFCE and leading chemical engineers to be more visible in policy debates on issues like water, energy, industry. There was much discussion of education - the need for updated and engaging course content and the desire of some for a more robust international accreditation. I have suggested elsewhere that we now need to move from Survey to Strategy to Delivery, and that is the challenge. There will be more to report on this at the next Forum at CHISA 2012.
