Research Topics

  • Catalyst use: production of bulk and fine chemicals, petrochemical industry, fuel cell processors, clean room gas control in the semiconductor industry, environmental services (emission control and VOC removal).
  • Catalyst Systems: precious- and base metal catalysts, refractory metal oxides and mixed oxide systems, micro-, meso- and macroporous carriers and catalysts (including zeolites), enzymes.
  • Catalyst forms: powders for fluid bed and slurry phase applications, shaped catalysts (including honeycombs) for fixed bed applications.
  • Selected research topics by products are: catalysts for production of synthesis gas, ammonia, hydrogen, methanol, formaldehyde, catalysts for functionalisation of paraffins, catalysts for production and processing of olefins, alcohols, amines and aromatics, catalysts for hydroprocessing, catalysts for fuels production.

Techniques and Instrumentation

  • Batch Reactors: Autoclaves (0,5-2 L), catalysts used as powders, mass of catalyst up to 50 g, pressure up to 300 bar, temperature up to 300°C.
  • Continuous flow reactors incl. micro-reactors, tubular reactors (fixed bed), catalyst used in granulate, extrusion or tablet, shape (dp>0,1 mm), volume of catalyst up to 150 ml, pressure up to 300 bar, temperature up to 850°C.
  • Instrumental Analysis of Liquids and Gases: Density (DIN 51757), refractive index, cloud-point (ASTM D-2500), pour-point (ASTM D-97), colour (ASTM D-1500), atmospheric distillation (ASTM D-86), vacuum distillation (ASTM D-1160), 4 L. distillation unit (ASTM D-2892), viscosity (ASTM D-445, ASTM D-446 ASTM D-2515), bromine index, iodine number, cetane index, total sulphur, total nitrogen, on-/offline gaschromatographic analysis, aromatics group analysis by HPLC.
  • Physical and chemical analysis of solids: surface area (single and multiple point BET), particle size distribution (laser particle sizer), pore volume (mercury penetration and gas up-take) and pore size distribution (nitrogen adsorption), CO-chemisorption, acidity determination (pyridine adsorption, NH3-TPR), TPR/TPO, thermo balance, crush strength (1N to 1000N), attrition, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (morphology, microstructure, topology, identification of elements on the surface by electron microprobe, element profile, element mapping, XRD (identification of phases, unit cell dimensions, crystallite size, structure and composition), qualitative and quantitative composition (XRF, AAS, ICP), main components (titration method, electrolysis, gravimetry), trace impurities, (AAS, ICP), spectroscopic methods: UV and IR, C/S Analyser (LECO).
