THE CONFERENCE SEASON

Keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in our field is a challenge for all chemical engineers, as it is for any active professional. The skills learnt at College or University will get you off to a good start, but science and technology are developing rapidly, so we will quickly get out of date if we don't make an effort to understand what is new. And of course, as our careers progress, we need constantly to learn and apply new skills. "Lifelong learning" this is sometimes called, or "Continuing Professional Development" - CPD to use the common acronym.
Fortunately, although there is an increasing amount to be learnt, there are also more and more channels of communication open to us. The internet has brought a revolution in the availability of information - if you can only separate the useful from the trivial, and also from the downright wrong. But many sources of reliable material, previously circulated in paper form, are now accessible on the internet, free or perhaps for a modest charge.
Joining a professional Institution or Society, such as the member societies of the EFCE, gives chemical engineers another easy route to keeping up-to-date, as the societies organise and publicise courses and conferences and provide networks through which we can learn informally from our colleagues. The EFCE wholeheartedly supports these activities. A list of approved events, which carry the EFCE logo, will be found at www.efce.info/events.html and a visit to this website is certainly worthwhile (see also Forthcoming EFCE Events, below). Whether you have information that you want to share, colleagues with whom you wish to meet and talk, or things you want to learn more about, you will find an opportunity somewhere in this programme.
Personally I will be attending several of these events, starting with the large ECCE-7/CHISA 2010 conference in Prague in August. This is always a great meeting place, and the combination with PRES 2010 means that an even larger feast of chemical engineering than usual is being spread before us. But whether it is ECCE -CHISA-PRES or a smaller summer meeting elsewhere, I wish you enjoyable and productive conferring!

EFCE President

5th European Summer School on Electrochemical Engineering
by Prof. Manuel Rodrigo

The 5th European Summer School on Electrochemical Engineering took place in Almagro, a small town at the south of Madrid (Spain) from September 6th to 11th, 2009. A total number of eighty-seven students attended to the school coming from a large number of European countries and also from Latin America.
The list of lecturers was of a very high quality including Prof. S. Bebelis (U. Patras, Greece), Prof. A. Katsaounis (Technical University of Crete, Greece), Prof. G. Kelsall (Imperial College, UK), Prof. V. Stankovic (U. Belgrade, Serbia). Prof. A. Cornell (KTH, Sweden), Prof. K. Bouzek (Insti-tute of Chemical Technology, Czech Republic), Prof. Ch. Comninellis (EPFL, Switzerland), Prof. F. Walsh (U. Southampton, UK), Prof. A. Bergel (CNRS & U. Toulouse, France), Prof. J. M. Ortiz (U. Alicante, Spain), and Prof. P. Lavela (U. Cordoba, Spain). All of them kindly accepted the invitation and prepared excellent lectures. The more significant topics in electrochemical engi-neering were covered during the teaching sessions, ranging from fundamentals to microbial fuel cells, and also including electrochemical cell design, industrial and environmental applications and fuel cell technology.
Students also had the opportunity to discuss their research results during scientific workshop sessions, specially designed to promote discussion. Both, the lectures and a summary of the research results of students, were included in a book entitled "Electrochemical Engineering: In-dustrial, Energy and Environmental Applications" (ISBN 978-84-934398-6-6), specially edited and printed for the event. The academic program was complemented by a very intense social program which included guide visits to Almagro and Toledo, visits to industrial facilities, magician show, concert and gala dinner.
The support of the Spanish Government, Regional Government, the University of Castilla La Mancha, the International Society of Electrochemistry, and a large number of companies has been very important to the success of this Summer School.
